Cher: The Next Urban Homesteader?
August 7, 2006
Did you read about Cher’s auction? She’s selling off 700 things: clothes, jewelry, furniture and even some stuff from the garage at her house in Malibu, California. “I am beginning a new chapter in my career and have decided to rewrite my personal environment, my home,” Cher said in a statement. “I’m only keeping about five items from everything I have.”
Keeping only five items? Talk about simplifying your life - her plan sounded even more ambitious than our “One Thing, Every Day” goal! But further in the article, she says she’s selling the old stuff because she wants to redecorate and buy all new things for her home.
So…never mind.

Moses…
I have thrown away my cracked paint cans, changed out my light bulbs, made some creamy faux butter, turned off my gas fireplace flame, set up a screen saver on my computer, I have started to dig a hole in my yard, but I find that is as hard as writing for me, and I am about to open up my garage for a sale - selling almost everything I have but 5 items. But, I just don’t think I am there yet - as a real homesteader. I need some more tips. You are not going to abandon us out here in the Urban dessert are you? Will there be more guidance coming soon? When does the sea part?

My plan is (or has been) to get rid of 90% of what I own. I could never only have 5 things left, because I’m too sentimental. Have to keep the things the kids made me, after all, and those are into the hundreds by now.
